NEWS AND REVIEWS |
"Wonderfully diverse and unusual..." "...a fine clear tenor, accompanied most often by guitar, sometimes more exotic acoustic instruments." "Singh's trump card is a deep, full voice which he deploys on an assortment of original songs and covers." "Master of the mouth-bow" "...an impressive and masterful performance." "...a singer with a powerful voice." "...folk circuit veteran, Dev Singh did an eclectic set that featured his wonderfully expressive deep, warm voice and satisfying accompaniment on guitar, dulcimer and the mouth-bow. Dev has a commanding yet warm stage presence, a voice that is deep and rich like Richie Havens but with the quaver of Buffy Sainte-Marie, and he is an excellent guitarist, featuring strong percussive picking, rich bass notes, and a nice ragtime feel. He started off with an upbeat dulcimer tune, then did a funky blues, followed by Woody Guthrie's 'Do Re Mi' done in ragtime style, with a great ending. He did a unique version of 'Mercedes Benz' on the mouth-bow, a pygmy instrument he heard of through Buffy Sainte-Marie, and explained that you cant smile while playing this instrument because it makes you go out of tune. It's difficult to keep from smiling, though, watching a man of large proportions playing a pygmy instrument. Then there was a Beatles song. But the highlight was a deeply moving song Dev wrote about a man in Vermont fighting a freeway being built on his land, with the stirring refrain, 'This is where I was born - this is where I'll die". |
